Vertical Jump Program Review – Plyometrics Jump Training
Saturday, December 19th, 2009A vertical jump is needed by athletes, especially by basketball players. This lets them jump higher and get closer to the hoop. This is also a necessary skill to be able to slam dunk the ball. A good vertical jump program is needed to be able to improve their jumping ability.
There are camps, lessons, and books available to learn how to jump better. The camps and lessons will have instructors who will work with you to work your muscles and be able to jump higher. You will get one on one time with these instructors. Books are also a good resource because they will walk you through what needs to be done but the work must be done all on your own.
Being able to jump well will depend on power and speed. Strength multiplied by power will determine your power. How much muscle strength you have will determine how high off the ground you can get. Your speed will decide how quickly your jump can be done. Improve your strength and your speed and you will improve your vertical jump.
To increase speed, drills need to be done that work on explosiveness. Sprints are a great way to do this. Go back and forth as much as you can and time yourself. Each time see if you can beat your previous score. The muscles of the legs, hips and the core need to be toned and strengthened as well.
To increase strength, the large leg muscles need to be worked. These muscles are the low back, the calves, the gluteal muscles, the quadriceps and the hamstrings. The stronger these muscles are, the more power they will be able to exert when jumping.
Being able to do a good vertical jump is a skill some athletes strive to achieve. With the proper strength training and speed training this type of jump is achievable.
