Brandon Flowers (lead singer)has said so in many interviews, including one on Radio 1. he means are we dancer(s), as in, do we follow the steps, do what we’re told to do, are we controlled. in such a society we are afraid to be ourselves and take chances. there’s another part where it mentions an open door, he’s scared because open doors are opportunities. the whole idea behind ‘dancer’ came from a quote that says ‘america has raised a generation of dancers’, and that quote meant just what i said before.

a while back people would call americans dancers. it was durring a time when US citizens were failing in terms of maths and sciences, so people said that dancing was all they were capable of.
I don’t know if this is what the song is refering to, but personally i think its saying how, are we really people, or are we just pretty faces good for nothing but dancing (no offense to the dancers out there)
